A Simple Guide from Eclipse Window Tinting
Choosing the right window tint should feel easy. Every state sets its own rules for how dark your tint can be, and the key measurement behind those rules is Visible Light Transmission (VLT).
If you drive in Ohio, Kentucky, or Indiana, here is a clear breakdown of what is legal and how to stay compliant.
VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission, which is the percentage of visible light that passes through your windows.
Higher VLT = lighter tint
Lower VLT = darker tint
Each state sets a minimum VLT requirement. Your tint must allow at least that amount of light through to be considered legal.
Ohio keeps the front windows on the lighter side, but gives you freedom in the rear.
Front Side Windows
Must allow at least 50% VLT
Windshield
Non-reflective tint allowed only above the AS-1 line or the top five inches
Rear Side Windows and Rear Window
No specific VLT limit, so darker tint is allowed
What this means: Ohio focuses on forward visibility while still giving drivers flexibility for privacy and heat control in the rear of the vehicle.
Kentucky’s rules vary depending on the type of vehicle.
Front Side Windows
Must allow at least 35% VLT
Windshield
Non-reflective tint allowed above the AS-1 line
Rear Side Windows and Rear Window
Sedans
Minimum 18% VLT
SUVs, Vans, and Trucks
Minimum 8% VLT
Indiana allows moderately dark tint while still maintaining visibility standards.
Front Side Windows
Must allow at least 30% VLT
Windshield
Non-reflective tint allowed above the AS-1 line
Rear Side Windows and Rear Window
Sedans
Minimum 30% VLT
SUVs and Vans
Slightly more flexibility depending on window placement
While details vary, the general guidelines are similar:
Tint must be non-reflective
Certain colors and mirrored finishes may be restricted
Vehicles with darker rear tint may require dual side mirrors
Windshield visibility is a major safety factor, so these rules tend to be enforced more strictly.
Legal tint does not mean sacrificing performance or appearance. Modern window films offer:
Strong heat rejection
UV protection for skin and interiors
Reduced glare
Improved driving comfort
A clean, professional look
If you drive across state lines often, choosing a tint that meets all applicable state laws is the safest approach.
Tint laws can change and may be interpreted differently by local authorities, so it is always wise to confirm current regulations with your state DMV or a qualified professional.
“At Eclipse, our goal has always been to give our clients the right information and the right installation so they feel confident every time they get behind the wheel. Tint laws can be confusing, especially when you drive across multiple states, which is why we put this guide together. We want our customers to feel educated, protected, and taken care of from the moment they walk in.
Thank you for trusting our family with your vehicles for more than two decades.”
